Immigration advocates are urging the United States government to establish a pathway to citizenship for Caribbean and other recipients as New York commemorates the 12th anniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
The New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC), a leading advocacy group for immigrants and refugees in New York, highlights that the program has served as an essential support system for over 835,000 DACA recipients.
These individuals, arriving in the U.S. at a young age, have been provided a platform to construct their futures.
Legal challenges and community impact
For years, the DACA program has offered temporary relief and opportunities to hundreds of thousands, while facing numerous legal challenges, the most recent being at the 5th Circuit Court.
The NYIC expressed concerns that the decision of the court might result in the termination of DACA, impacting the stability of approximately 31,000 New Yorkers and relegating them to uncertainty.
The organization emphasized the urgent need for Washington to provide permanent solutions for DACA recipients, acknowledging their significant contributions to the social, cultural, and economic landscapes of the United States.
Personal stories and advocacy efforts
The efficacy of DACA in enabling personal and professional achievements was shared by Diana Rodriguez Davila, a senior communications associate at NYIC.
Davila outlined her journey under DACA, which allowed her to pursue higher education and career development, culminating in obtaining her master’s degree and her first car.
However, she voiced concerns over the diminishing hopes for legal status amidst ongoing legal scrutiny over the program’s validity.
The Congressional battlefield
Meanwhile, Make the Road Action (MRA), another influential immigrant advocacy group in New York, disclosed that the state is home to 21,830 DACA recipients. Many are pivotal members of the Long Island community.
The group is pressing U.S. Congressman Anthony D’Esposito to commit to a legislative resolution that would secure a citizenship pathway for all DACA holders.
This is in contrast to some Republican viewpoints favoring the separation of DACA recipients from their families and communities.
According to MRA, a significant majority of voters in D’Esposito’s district support legislative actions to ensure DACA recipients’ access to citizenship pathways.
The ongoing struggle for stability
Despite the undeniable benefits of DACA, including enhanced economic opportunities and protection from deportation, advocates and community members continue to tirelessly defend the program.
The potential cessation of DACA looms large, threatening severe repercussions not only for recipients and their families but also for the broader fabric of the country.
Advocates call for a legislative shield to fortify the future of DACA recipients and uphold the values of inclusion and opportunity that define the nation.
