Richie Berrington and Michael Leask orchestrated a match-winning partnership to lead Scotland to a vital victory over Namibia, strengthening their prospects of progressing in the T20 World Cup.
Chasing a target of 156, Scotland secured the win with five wickets and nine balls to spare at Kensington Oval.
After a shaky start, where Scotland was 73 for four following the dismissal of Matthew Cross, Berrington and Leask stabilized the innings. The pair added 74 runs from 42 balls, with Leask blasting four sixes in his 35-run innings and Berrington remaining unbeaten on 47. Berrington capped off the chase in style by smashing David Wiese for a six over long-on, celebrating the win enthusiastically.
Early bowling brilliance
Brad Currie was instrumental with the ball, delivering a tight spell of two for 16 from four overs. Brad Wheal set the tone early, dismissing JP Kotze with his third delivery. Currie and Chris Sole followed suit, each contributing to Namibia’s 48 for three at the end of the powerplay.
Namibia’s Gerhard Erasmus provided resistance, compiling a half-century off just 30 balls, including a six off Leask. However, Leask had the last laugh, as Matthew Cross stumped Erasmus shortly after his milestone. Namibia added 42 runs and lost four wickets in the final five overs, with Currie and Wheal keeping things tight at the death.
Scotland’s chase began with a boost from Ruben Trumpelmann, who conceded eight wides. Michael Jones, impressive in the rain-affected match against England, scored 26 before falling to Erasmus. Brandon McMullen contributed 19 before a stumping left Scotland in a precarious position.
Berrington and Leask’s crucial stand
Facing a required rate nearing 10 an over, Berrington and Leask seized the initiative. Keyovers yielded 13 runs off Tangeni Lungameni and 19 off Wiese, tipping the scales in Scotland’s favor. Leask’s powerful hitting, including a towering six over the big screen, set the stage for the final push. Though Leask eventually holed out, Berrington ensured the win with a decisive six off Wiese.
The victory places Scotland on three points, putting pressure on England to secure a win against Australia on Saturday. Scotland’s next match will be crucial as they aim to continue their progress in the tournament.
