Netherlands triumph over Nepal thanks to O’Dowd’s unbeaten 54

Max O’Dowd’s unbeaten 54 guided the Netherlands to a six-wicket win against Nepal in their opening match of the ICC Men’s Twenty20 World Cup Monday. The low-scoring Group D contest took place at Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas.

O’Dowd’s composed innings, which included four fours and one six from 48 balls, anchored the Dutch chase of 107, successfully clipping the wings of their fellow ICC associate team.

After losing opener Michael Levitt for one in the second over, O’Dowd and Vikramjit Singh steadied the innings, taking the Netherlands to 36 for one at the end of the Power Play. Their second-wicket partnership of 40 runs helped settle the Dutch nerves. Singh was eventually dismissed lbw by Dipendra Singh Airee in the ninth over, but O’Dowd remained cool-headed, guiding his team to victory and securing two points.

Earlier, a rain delay pushed the toss back by half an hour, raising concerns of a reduced contest. However, the weather cleared, allowing the match to proceed as scheduled. The Netherlands opted to bowl first, putting Nepal in to bat.

35 from 37 balls

Nepal struggled against the Dutch bowling attack, with only their captain Rohit Paudel managing to put up a fight, scoring 35 from 37 balls. The rest of the Nepalese line-up faltered, and they were bowled out for 106 in 19.2 overs.

Logan van Beek was the standout bowler for the Netherlands, taking three for 18 from 3.2 overs. Tim Pringle also shone with figures of three for 20 from his four overs, while Paul van Meekeren and Bas de Leede chipped in with two wickets each.

Group D action continues on Friday with Bangladesh taking on Sri Lanka at Grand Prairie Stadium. The Netherlands will next face South Africa on Saturday at Nassau County Stadium in East Meadow, New York. Nepal will play against Sri Lanka next Tuesday at Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill, Florida.
