Reggae Girlz forward Tiffany Cameron has expressed her confidence in the future of the Jamaican women’s national football team, following her observations of the emerging talent within the squad.
Cameron, a member of the historic World Cup squad, had previously withdrawn her services due to ongoing disputes with the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF). However, with the issues now resolved, she is enthusiastic about rejoining the team for the upcoming friendlies against Brazil.
During the absence of the World Cup veterans, interim head coach Xavier Gilbert provided opportunities for several young players to make their senior debuts. Cameron was particularly impressed by the performance and potential of these new additions, signaling a bright future for the Reggae Girlz.
“I was impressed by some of the young talent that we have recently seen represent Jamaica on the senior level,” Cameron remarked. “It was evident that they gave their best and were honored to represent Jamaica. It’s important that we continue to develop all players in our pool so that there is a more competitive environment and more players are able to compete at a high level.”
Challenging matchup against Brazil
Among the promising young players are former Excelsior High standouts Shaneil Buckley, Davia Richards, and Destiny Powell, who participated in the CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup qualifiers. The team placed third in their group with three draws and one loss, with Buckley and Richards each scoring their first senior international goals against Panama and Guatemala, respectively. Richards has retained her place in the senior squad for the double fixtures against Brazil.
Cameron emphasized the significance of the upcoming matches against Brazil, noting that a strong performance could boost the team’s morale and standing.
“I’m excited to be back in national colours again and I’m looking forward to a challenging matchup against Brazil. It’s important for us to stay defensively disciplined and choose the right moments to threaten Brazil’s backline,” Cameron stated.
Jamaica will face Brazil twice in international friendlies, with the first match scheduled for June 1 at Arena Pernambuco Stadium and the second set for June 4 at the Fonte Nova Arena. These fixtures are seen as crucial for the Reggae Girlz as they prepare for future competitions and aim to build on their recent successes.
