The West Indies cricket team delivered a commanding performance to secure an eight-wicket victory over South Africa, completing a historic 3-0 series sweep in the Twenty20 International series at Sabina Park on Sunday.
This marks the first time the West Indies have swept South Africa in a T20 series, giving them a significant confidence boost ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup starting next week.
Johnson Charles, named Player-of-the-Match, led the charge with a blistering innings of 69 runs off just 26 balls, featuring nine fours and five sixes. His explosive performance set the stage for the successful chase of South Africa’s 164-run target, achieved with 55 balls to spare.
Strong opening partnership
Charles and Brandon King, the interim captain for this series, laid a solid foundation with a 92-run partnership for the first wicket. King contributed 44 runs, while Kyle Mayers, who is among the reserves for the World Cup, remained unbeaten on 36. Mayers sealed the victory with a six off Reeza Hendricks, concluding the match emphatically.
“It was great the start we got,” Charles said in a post-match interview. “We have been working hard during the camp we had before the series, and we have worked hard on our skills and the way we want to play in the World Cup, so it’s just a matter of implementing what we have been practising.”
With regular captain Rovman Powell absent, King led the team to a morale-boosting series win. “I am just happy for the victory,” King remarked. “We believe in each other as a unit and understand each other very well. We have been playing with the same group of guys for the last year or two, so we really understand each other’s game, and we have a lot of confidence in each other.”
King emphasized the significance of the series win, noting, “This is an important series win for us. It’s the last set of matches before the World Cup, so it’s been really good preparation for us, and it’s really good momentum to carry into the World Cup. All of the guys are feeling confident about their game, so that’s good.”
Bowling efforts shine
Left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie, named Player of the Series, was instrumental in the West Indies’ success, taking eight wickets at an average of 8.50. In the final match, Obed McCoy led the bowling attack with figures of 3-39, while Motie (2-21) and Shamar Joseph (2-26) provided crucial support, restricting South Africa to 163 for seven.
