With meticulous attention to detail, Dr. Beach, who serves as Professor and Director of the Laboratory for Coastal Research at Florida International University, has become a trusted authority in evaluating coastal destinations.

Caladesi Island State Park and Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park shine

Two picturesque gems from the Sunshine State have claimed coveted spots on Dr. Beach’s prestigious list. Caladesi Island State Park, nestled in Clearwater, secured the fourth position, while Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park in Naples emerged at a commendable eighth place.

Both beaches, situated on the tranquil west coast of Florida, captivate visitors with their pristine shores and inviting waters.

Dr. Beach’s methodology: A blend of science and experience

Dr. Beach’s meticulous methodology involves the use of 50 comprehensive criteria to assess each beach’s attributes.

Since 1991, he has meticulously compiled annual lists, providing beach enthusiasts with valuable insights and recommendations.

His dedication to evaluating factors like water cleanliness, sand quality, and overall safety ensures a rigorous and impartial selection process.

The essence of West Coast Beaches: Soft sands and serene waters

Explaining his rationale for including these west coast wonders in the top 10, Dr. Beach emphasized their exceptional qualities.

Both Caladesi Island State Park and Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park boast super-fine, white sands and warm, gentle waves—a winning combination for beach enthusiasts seeking relaxation and recreation.

East vs. West: Dr. Beach weighs in

Reflecting on the perennial debate over Florida’s coastal superiority, Dr. Beach previously highlighted the distinctive characteristics of the state’s eastern and western shores.

In 2023, he underscored the softer, cooler sands of the west coast, contrasting with the rougher, hotter sands of the east coast.

This nuanced analysis illuminates the diverse appeal of Florida’s beaches and underscores Dr. Beach’s keen observational prowess.

An unbiased evaluation process

Dr. Beach’s commitment to integrity extends to his evaluation process. Conducting unannounced visits and refusing gratuities, he ensures an unbiased assessment focused solely on environmental quality and beach maintenance.

By rewarding beaches that prioritize sustainability and preservation, Dr. Beach contributes to the conservation of coastal ecosystems and the promotion of responsible tourism.
