The ICC Men’s Twenty20 World Cup organizers have released the official schedule for the warm-up matches leading into the 2024 tournament.
In an unprecedented move, only venues in Trinidad and Tobago and the United States will host these crucial preparatory games.
Announced on Wednesday by the International Cricket Council (ICC), the world governing body for cricket, the 16-match schedule is evenly split between Trinidad and Tobago and the United States. In Trinidad and Tobago, the Queen’s Park Oval and Brian Lara Cricket Academy will serve as the match venues.
Meanwhile, in the United States, the approved international venues include Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill, Florida; Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas, Texas; and Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, east of Manhattan, New York.
Only one warm-up match
The West Indies, co-hosts of the tournament, are slated to play only one warm-up match. This game will be against Australia, the current Test and One-day International world champions. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 30, at the Queen’s Park Oval.
India, one of the tournament’s most anticipated teams, will face Bangladesh in their sole warm-up match in the United States. However, the start time and venue for this game are yet to be confirmed. Notably, defending champions England, along with New Zealand and Pakistan, have no warm-up matches scheduled.
The warm-up matches will follow the standard 20-over format but will not be granted official T20 International status. This decision allows teams to field all members of their 15-player squads.
The ICC news release highlighted a change in the tournament’s format, stating that teams will have the option to play up to two warm-up matches based on their arrival times.
