In a historic performance at the RAC Arena in Perth, Australian Super Netball witnessed a record-breaking victory led by the exceptional Jhaniele Fowler-Nembhard.
Celebrating her 100th game in the league, Fowler-Nembhard, a towering figure in netball, scored a staggering 62 goals from 64 attempts, propelling West Coast Fever to a 94-58 triumph over Queensland Firebirds. This monumental win marks the largest ever margin in Super Netball history and cements Fever’s status as one of the two remaining unbeaten teams this season.
The game started strongly for Fever, who quickly established a 26-16 lead by the end of the first quarter. This dominance extended to a 49-28 score by halftime, leaving the Firebirds struggling to mount a challenge. Despite a slightly more competitive third quarter, Fever surged ahead to 74-48, effectively sealing the victory well before the final whistle.
Fowler-Nembhard’s teammate, Shanice Beckford, also contributed to the win, adding four goals from six attempts. For the Firebirds, goal shooter Donnell Wallam fought valiantly, netting 42 goals from 54 attempts, but it wasn’t enough to challenge Fever’s supremacy.
Standout performances from other Caribbean players
The weekend’s matches also featured standout performances from other Caribbean players. On Sunday, in a closely contested match at the Ken Rosewall Arena in Sydney, Trinidadian Samantha Wallace-Joseph led New South Wales with 14 goals from 16 attempts, although her team narrowly lost 61-59 to Melbourne Vixens.
Meanwhile, another Jamaican, Romelda Aiken-George, shone on Saturday, helping Adelaide Thunderbirds to a convincing 59-37 victory against the new franchise, Melbourne Mavericks, at John Cain Arena. Aiken-George scored 32 goals from 34 attempts, with teammate Lucy Austin supporting well with 12 goals from 14 attempts. The Thunderbirds’ defensive strength was highlighted by Shamera Sterling-Humphrey, who made eight gains, including five crucial ones in the final quarter.
In another high-scoring encounter, Jamaican defender Jodi-Ann Ward led Giants Netball to an 86-80 victory over Sunshine Coast Lightning, showcasing the depth of talent from the Caribbean in the league.
These matches not only highlight the individual brilliance of the players but also the growing competitiveness and entertainment value of the Australian Super Netball Championship. As the season progresses, the performances of these top athletes will be keenly watched by fans and analysts alike.
