Former West Indies Twenty20 captain Carlos Brathwaite is set to lead a constellation of international stars in the inaugural Princess Margaret Cricket to Conquer Cancer event, scheduled for May next year in Toronto, Canada.
The event, unveiled by the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, aims to become the largest of its kind in the country, bringing together celebrities to raise funds for cancer research at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. Organizers anticipate that the event, using cricket as a vehicle, will also foster a sense of community.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the event, Brathwaite highlighted the growing popularity of cricket in Canada, describing it as a testament to the country’s welcoming and multicultural community. He emphasized the global reach of the sport and its potential to unite people from diverse backgrounds.
Personal connection to cancer
Reflecting on his personal connection to cancer through his mother’s battle with breast cancer, Brathwaite shared his hope of making the event a celebration for survivors and an inspiration for those currently undergoing treatment. Dr. Amit Oza, head of the Division of Medical Oncology and Hematology at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, expressed confidence in the event’s potential to make a significant impact on cancer research and the sport of cricket.
With cancer remaining the leading cause of death in Canada according to government health statistics, the Cricket to Conquer Cancer event aims to raise awareness and funds to support ongoing research efforts. Scheduled for May 31, 2025, in Mississauga, the event represents a unique opportunity to unite communities in the fight against cancer while celebrating the spirit of cricket.
