Sunil Narine ends speculation, decides against international comeback for T20 World Cup

Champion off-spinner Sunil Narine has definitively ruled out any possibility of returning to international cricket for the upcoming ICC Men’s Twenty20 (T20) World Cup, scheduled to take place in the Caribbean and the United States this June.

Narine made his stance clear in a statement posted on Instagram, putting to rest the swirling speculation surrounding his potential comeback.

Addressing the speculation head-on, the Trinidadian said that he had already come to terms with his decision to retire from international cricket. Despite the efforts of West Indies T20 Captain Rovman Powell to persuade him otherwise, Narine firmly stated that he has closed the door on any potential return to the international arena.

Acknowledging the flattering responses to his recent performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Narine expressed gratitude but emphasized his commitment to his decision. He conveyed his support for the players who will represent West Indies in the T20 World Cup, highlighting their hard work and dedication.

Focus remains on domestic leagues

Narine’s recent performances for Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL have been exceptional, further fueling speculation about a potential comeback. However, he clarified that his focus remains on domestic leagues, as evidenced by his stellar display with both bat and ball in recent matches.

Having not represented West Indies since 2019 and retiring last year, Narine’s decision effectively closes the chapter on his international career, including missing out on the last two T20 World Cup campaigns.

In summary, Sunil Narine’s firm stance on retirement signals the end of any hopes for his return to international cricket, with the seasoned off-spinner choosing to focus on his domestic commitments.
