Negotiations between shareholder governments and the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) are nearing completion, signaling a crucial step forward in the revival of the regional carrier.

In a recent development, Browne disclosed during a cabinet meeting that a lease agreement has been inked for an aircraft, marking a pivotal move for the rebranded LIAT (2020) Limited.

This step is essential for the acquisition of an Air Operator Certificate (AOC), laying the groundwork for the airline’s return to service.

Targeting April 2024: The Flight Path Ahead

Anticipation builds as Browne estimates LIAT (2020) Ltd to commence operations in April 2024, projecting a timeline for the carrier’s revival.

However, hurdles loom, primarily the procedural complexities arising from the liquidation court proceedings of the former LIAT (1974), which faced insolvency amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Navigating procedural challenges

Melford Nicholas, the Information Minister, sheds light on the intricacies of the lease agreement, emphasizing its procedural nature.

He elucidates that while the government stands ready for the outright purchase of the first aircraft, navigating through legal formalities is imperative. The Caribbean Development Bank’s involvement necessitates adherence to due process, potentially prolonging the acquisition process until September.

Antigua and Barbuda displays firm resolve in revitalizing LIAT, earmarking approximately US$12 million for the procurement of three ATR 42-600 aircraft.

Staffing strategies

Addressing staffing concerns, Nicholas outlines LIAT (2020) approach, emphasizing a blend of fresh talent and seasoned professionals.

A strategic partnership with Nigeria’s leading airline, Air Peace, augurs well for bolstering the airline’s workforce, enriching its talent pool.

Paving the way for progress

Nicholas exudes confidence in LIAT (2020) prospects, envisioning its emergence as a transformative force in regional air travel.

Operating primarily as a private entity, the revitalized airline is poised to inject dynamism into the regional aviation landscape, promising benefits for all stakeholders.
