Following a strong performance by Jamaica’s 4x400m relay team in the heats at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, concern arose for athlete Leah Anderson as she collapsed after the race.
The team, consisting of Junelle Bromfield, Andrenette Knight, Charokee Young, and Leah Anderson, showed tenacity and determination during the race, with Anderson, making her debut in a major championship, notably chasing down Great Britain’s last leg runner, Jesse Knight.
However, the success of the team was momentarily overshadowed by Anderson’s collapse as they left the track. Anderson, based in New York, experienced erratic breathing and pulse rates, prompting medics to attend to her immediately.
Fellow competitors and officials assisted by raising Anderson’s legs while she lay prostrate, ensuring she remained conscious throughout the ordeal. After over 10 minutes, Anderson was able to stand up unaided, though she appeared slightly disoriented.
Final foul-up
Despite the incident, Anderson remained focused and even responded to a passerby’s complimentary remark about her performance in the race. She acknowledged the effort but also humorously noted her opponent’s “second wind” that prevented her from catching up.
The team finished the race in 3 minutes and 27.35 seconds, an impressive performance despite Anderson’s collapse. The incident raised concerns about her well-being and the potential impact on the team’s line-up for the final race. The team eventually fouled up in the final as they dropped the baton on the third leg.
As Anderson receives further medical attention and support, the team’s performance underscores their strength and determination on the track, despite the unexpected challenges they faced.
