Curling Jamaica unveiled a comprehensive strategy aimed at identifying and nurturing talent for the sport of curling, garnering praise and support from the Jamaica Olympic Association (JOA) for their ambitious plans to expand winter sports in the country.
At the launch event held at the JOA headquarters in Kingston on Monday, Vice President of Curling Jamaica, Robert Richards, outlined a three-pronged approach to identify and develop curling talent, aligning with governing body’s president Ian Anderson’s vision of securing Olympic gold by 2040.
Richards, a former president of the Jamaica Badminton Association, expressed his dedication to Curling Jamaica’s mission and highlighted the significance of the three avenues through which they aim to foster talent.
The first avenue involves tapping into Jamaicans based overseas, particularly those involved in other sports or awaiting an opportunity. Additionally, Curling Jamaica aims to target young Jamaicans studying abroad, offering them an alternative sporting pathway beyond traditional choices like football and track and field.

The third avenue involves collaboration with the Canadian team to scout potential talent in Jamaican schools, with selected youngsters being sponsored to attend the Curling Academy in Canada. This initiative aims to provide comprehensive training and support to nurture talent from a young age, potentially leading to scholarships and further opportunities in the sport.
JOA Secretary General and CEO Ryan Foster welcomed Curling Jamaica to the Olympic family, emphasizing the importance of Jamaica’s expansion into winter sports. Foster commended Curling Jamaica for contributing to the country’s representation in the Winter Olympics and assured them of the JOA’s support in various aspects, including governance, coaching development, and infrastructure.
In his closing remarks, Foster expressed optimism about Curling Jamaica’s future, urging them to uphold the national motto of “Out of Many, One People” as they strive for success in the Winter Olympics. He reiterated the JOA’s commitment to supporting Curling Jamaica’s endeavors, underscoring their shared dedication to achieving excellence in winter sports on the international stage.
