In a demonstration of solidarity within the Manchester City squad, Reggae Girl Khadija “Bunny” Shaw has emphasized the team’s cohesion, which has propelled them to a remarkable winning streak and positioned them jointly atop the Women’s Super League.
Last Friday’s clash against leaders and defending champions Chelsea proved pivotal as City secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory away at Kingsmeadow, with Shaw, 27, netting her league-leading 14th goal of the season.
The triumph marked City’s 11th consecutive win across all competitions, drawing them level with Chelsea on 34 points at the league summit. Reflecting on the team’s success, Shaw attributed their impressive form to their collective ethos, stating, “Throughout the season we’ve spoken about sticking together as a team, staying humble, communicating, and working for each other.”
Effective communication on the field
Shaw’s decisive goal in the 14th minute against Chelsea epitomized City’s unity and determination. After teammate Jess Park dispossessed Erin Cuthbert and played a pivotal pass to Shaw, the Jamaican forward showcased her skill with an exquisite low finish, securing the vital victory. Despite receiving attention for her goal-scoring prowess, Shaw was quick to acknowledge Park’s contribution, highlighting their effective communication on the field.
“I’ve spoken a lot with Jess about communicating,” Shaw remarked, emphasizing the importance of teamwork. “When she picked that ball up, I was in her ear saying, ‘Drive it, drive it, drive it!’ We’ve done it in training quite a few times so it’s about repetition.”
As Manchester City continues their quest for success in the Women’s Super League, Shaw’s praise for the team’s unity serves as a testament to their collective effort and camaraderie on the pitch.
