In a letter dated December 12, 2023, CWI informed Butcher, a member of the selection panel led by Desmond Haynes, that his tenure would conclude. The 70-year-old Barbadian had served as a selector for the West Indies Senior Men’s and Youth panels for a year, appointed on December 23, 2022.

Butcher voiced his surprise and shock at the non-renewal, citing the lack of prior indication or communication regarding his performance. He expressed his dismay at the impersonal nature of the letter, considering his contributions and the positive results achieved during his tenure, including notable victories against top-ranked teams.

Remains open to contributing to cricket at the international level

Despite the West Indies’ successful calendar year, highlighted by series wins against South Africa, India, England, and Zimbabwe, Butcher’s tenure ended following the team’s failure to qualify for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

Asked about future roles, Butcher remains open to contributing to cricket at the international level, emphasizing his wealth of knowledge, expertise, and successful experience. He asserts his professionalism and willingness to serve, whether with West Indies or another cricketing entity.

Notably, Butcher’s credentials are bolstered by the emergence of Shamar Joseph, a rising fast bowling talent from the Caribbean.
