To bolster connections and foster investments with the Jamaican diaspora, the Jamaican government recently unveiled the Jamaica Diaspora Engagement Model (JAM-DEM).
This virtual platform, which brings together various government agencies, is hailed as a significant leap forward in utilizing technology to strengthen global ties.
Minister of State’s vision for JAM-DEM
Hon. Alando Terrelonge, the Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, spoke at the inauguration ceremony held at the Ministry’s downtown Kingston location on January 30.
He underscored the importance of JAM-DEM, emphasizing that it consolidates critical government components for the benefit of the Jamaican diaspora.
Terrelonge emphasized the platform’s role in connecting Jamaicans abroad with lucrative investment prospects, primarily managed by the Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO).
Through JAM-DEM, individuals are presented with enticing opportunities to invest in their homeland and reap significant returns, as Jamaica teems with flourishing business prospects.
Origins in Economic Council recommendations
The conception of this virtual facility traces back to recommendations made in 2016 by the Economic Growth Council (EGC).
The idea was later discussed during the seventh Biennial Diaspora Conference in 2017.
These discussions highlighted the need for a digital mechanism capable of bridging communication gaps and empowering members of the diaspora community.
Collaborative efforts behind JAM-DEM
The Minister of State emphasized the collaborative nature of JAM-DEM’s development. It emerged through a partnership that involved the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ).
Their dedication and support have been instrumental in creating this diaspora-centric virtual platform.
A catalyst for diaspora investments
JAM-DEM is envisioned as a catalyst for fostering an enabling environment to attract diaspora investments in priority sectors of the Jamaican economy.
It is anticipated to stimulate entrepreneurship, encourage business development, and promote innovation.
In a world increasingly defined by connectivity and engagement, Minister Terrelonge encourages the embrace of JAM-DEM as more than just a virtual space.
He sees it as a symbol of collective commitment to harnessing the immense potential of the diaspora, propelling Jamaica towards greater heights.
