Mural to be seen in Everglades departure lounge
Broward Cultural Division and Port Everglades recently announced the completion of an artwork by a local artist selected for a Port Everglades cruise terminal commission. Fort Lauderdale resident Laura Atria, a member of the Broward Art Club, recently created Ocean’s Footprint, a wall mural that will make an impactful statement in the departure lounge at Cruise Terminal 29.
The mural portrays marine life that is indigenous to South Florida and consists of stylized sea life trailing behind two main images – a manatee and turtles – and includes abstract representations of mollusks and crustaceans. As a local, a certified rescue diver, and an avid beach goer, Atria explored creative and intricate ways to represent our ecosystem. “My hope is that this artistic representation will promote and generate conversation,” says the artist. “As well as interest, concern and love for South Florida’s natural environment.”
Broward County’s Public Art & Design (PAD) Program is celebrating 40 years of success in 2016! This project for Cruise Terminal 29 was requested specifically by Port Everglades, to entertain and delight passengers as they embark on their cruises. This is one of the projects and initiatives that will debut this year with the 40th anniversary of PAD.
