Record-breaking season propels Julien Alfred to women’s Bowerman Award

Julien Alfred, who had an extraordinary season at the University of Texas in 2023, has been named the recipient of the women’s Bowerman Award. The announcement took place at the Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center in Aurora, Colorado, where Alfred’s remarkable achievements were celebrated.

Throughout the year, Alfred exhibited exceptional performance, claiming six NCAA championships across both indoor and outdoor seasons as a Longhorn athlete. Her achievements included indoor national titles in the 60m and 200m, followed by outdoor victories in the 100m and 200m at the NCAA Championships.

Notably, the University of Texas secured an outdoor national title in the 4×100 relay, posting a preliminary time of 41.55, with Alfred anchoring the team to victory in the final.

St. Lucian-born

Hailing from St. Lucia, Alfred emerged as one of Edrick Floreal’s most accomplished athletes at Texas, and quite possibly in the program’s history. She recorded wind-legal outdoor times of 10.83 seconds in the 100m and 21.91 seconds in the 200m, ranking as the fourth and second best all-time among collegians. Indoors, Alfred achieved personal best times of 6.94 seconds in the 60m and 22.01 seconds in the 200m, with the latter representing the second-fastest mark in world history.

Alfred’s achievement marks the second time a female athlete from Texas has received the prestigious Bowerman Award, with Courtney Okolo having previously earned the honor in 2016.

In 2022, Alfred had already showcased her talent by winning NCAA outdoor titles in the 4×100 relay and the 100m, earning her a spot as a Bowerman semi-finalist.
