This milestone agreement, signed by Senator the Hon. Kamina Johnson Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Jamaica, and His Excellency Roberto Alvarez, her Dominican counterpart, underscores the commitment of both nations to strengthen their bilateral ties.

A pivotal step towards closer cooperation

The signing of the Framework Agreement, which took place during Senator Johnson Smith’s official two-day visit to the Dominican Republic on November 8, signifies a deliberate move towards reinforcing collaboration in key areas.

Senator Johnson Smith highlighted the significance of this agreement, emphasizing that it will serve as a catalyst for political collaboration, trade and investment facilitation, and the enrichment of educational and cultural interactions between the two countries.

A multifaceted collaboration

Under the Framework Agreement, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic are poised to exchange expertise and technology, with a particular focus on boosting agricultural production and ensuring food security.

Additionally, they plan to jointly safeguard their shared environmental heritage by committing to initiatives related to biodiversity, water resource management, and sustainable solid waste practices.

Sharing knowledge: A special Lecture

As part of her visit, Senator Johnson Smith delivered a Special Guest Lecture at the Dominican Republic’s Institute for Higher Education in Consular Training on November 9.

The lecture, titled ’61 Years Strong: A Foreign Policy of Principles, Pragmatism, and Possibilities,’ aimed to provide insight into Jamaica’s foreign policy over the past six decades.

The lecture was well-received by a diverse audience that included practitioners and students of diplomacy, members of the Diplomatic and Consular Corps, government ministry staff, and members of the Jamaican Diaspora.
