Amid the approaching holiday season, travelers across the United States brace themselves for the chaos of crowded airports and the dreaded specter of expected delays.
However, for those making their way through South Florida’s Miami International Airport (MIA), there is a silver lining in the form of significantly shorter security wait times.
A recent study conducted by travel industry publication PlanetWare has shed light on this aviation oasis within the Sunshine State.
The Sunshine state’s standout
According to PlanetWare’s research, MIA stands out with the shortest average security wait time in Florida, providing a glimmer of hope for travelers during the Thanksgiving rush.
This revelation comes as a beacon of respite for those anticipating the typically stressful experience of holiday travel.

MIA’s impressive national ranking
The study indicates that Miami International Airport boasts the 6th-shortest average security wait time in the entire United States, clocking in at a mere 10.4 minutes.
This remarkable achievement places MIA in an elite group of airports renowned for their efficiency and passenger-friendly experience.
Behind the numbers
PlanetWare’s methodology relies on data provided by iFly, a comprehensive flight information platform.
It tracks flight volumes and monitors the staffing levels of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) at various airports to estimate wait times hour by hour. This data-driven approach ensures the accuracy of the reported wait times.
A select group
To compile its rankings, PlanetWare narrowed down its focus to the 31 U.S. airports with the highest average passenger numbers annually.
These airports represent a cross-section of the nation’s busiest travel hubs, allowing for a fair comparison of security wait times.
The study then arranges the airports on this list from the longest to the shortest average wait time, revealing MIA’s exceptional standing.
MIA’s dual distinction
In a press release, MIA noted that it achieved this ranking while also being the fastest-growing mega airport in seat capacity (30 million annual passengers or more) in the U.S. since the pandemic, according to Airports Council International-North America.
Florida’s premier mega airport
MIA also secured the top spot among mega airports in the Sunshine State, cementing its status as Florida’s premier travel hub.
Additionally, in a recent report by J.D. Power, MIA ranks an impressive 4th place among the busiest airports in North America, further solidifying its reputation as a top-tier airport in the region.
