Celebrating resilience: Antigua and Barbuda marks 42 years of independence

Antigua and Barbuda on Wednesday marked its 42nd anniversary of independence from Britain with considerable pride and reflection.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne, in a public address, spoke of the nation’s extraordinary progress, resilience, and unwavering determination displayed by the citizens in the face of numerous challenges over the past four decades.

Battling against the odds

The Prime Minister acknowledged the immense challenges, including destructive storms and economic shocks, that have shaped the country’s journey. 

He emphasized the resilience of the nation in navigating obstacles such as the global COVID-19 pandemic and various powerful hurricanes. 

According to Browne, the adversities have not deterred the nation’s spirit but fuelled their perseverance to secure progress and advancement.

Economic revival: A remarkable recovery

Highlighting the economic trajectory, Browne spoke of a daunting period during the COVID-19 pandemic when the nation experienced a significant loss in GDP. 

However, he highlighted that the nation showcased commendable economic stewardship, witnessing an impressive rebound with an average growth rate exceeding eight per cent annually over the last three years. 

He added that the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean has projected robust growth for the country, second only to nations abundant in oil and gas resources.

Investing in the future: Education and development projects

Browne expressed confidence in the bright and promising future awaiting the nation. He detailed considerable investments in education, ensuring enhanced opportunities for nationals.

He also shared excitement over imminent projects expected to significantly bolster economic growth and employment, including luxury resorts and hotels.

A stronghold of stability and democracy

Commending the nation’s political landscape, Browne underscored the significance of political stability, democracy, and human rights in the country’s development. 

He pointed out the absence of political prisoners, emphasizing a culture that promotes expression, dissent, and media debate, which has been pivotal in creating an attractive investment climate.

Forward with focus: Addressing continuing challenges

While celebrating achievements, Browne also noted ongoing challenges, like water distribution and social welfare, necessitating further focus and action. 

Recognizing the persistence of issues such as poverty, he emphasized the nation’s commitment to promoting a life of respect and dignity for every citizen, portraying a holistic approach to national development and prosperity.
