Forty-eight new attorneys have stepped into the legal arena in Barbados, embarking on their journey with encouragement to innovate and explore diverse fields of legal practice. However, they were warned against the use of artificial intelligence (AI) during their practice to cut corners, according to Barbados Loop News.
A word of caution on artificial intelligence
This advice comes in the wake of a notable incident in the U.S., where two legal professionals faced stern repercussions for relying on the AI tool ChatGPT.
Reports are that they used ChatGPT to gather supporting background information for a submission without fact-checking and the AI added fake cases.
A call for continuous learning
According to Barbados Loop News, Chief Justice Sir Patterson Cheltenham emphasized the vitality of continuous learning in the legal profession.
His counsel was explicit – the commitment to an ongoing program of study and enhancement is imperative.
He cautioned them to be wise when using new technology and AI, encouraging them not to abandon their “intellectual gifts”.

Exploring the realms of criminal law
The article further noted that acting Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Wilfred Abrahams, spotlighted the area of criminal law as a realm ripe for exploration and development.
He noted a distinct lack of diversity in the field, where a handful of names dominate the practice.
In a call echoing the sentiment of senior legal practitioners, the new attorneys were encouraged to contemplate a career in criminal law, opening doors to new possibilities and diverse expertise.
A diverse cohort stepping into the legal field
Minister Abrahams commended the diverse nature of the new cohort of attorneys, mentioning it as one of the most varied groups the Court has ever welcomed.
However, he also emphasized the necessity for more professionals to venture into areas such as criminal law, urging them to break traditional norms and make significant strides in underrepresented fields.
Upholding standards and professional integrity
A stern reminder was also directed at the new attorneys regarding the high standards expected in the legal profession.
Emphasis was placed on preparedness, respectful interactions within the judicial system, and a readiness to seek assistance when needed.
Encouragement was paired with reminders of the professional standards that these new entrants are expected to uphold, marking the beginning of their legal odyssey with a blend of advice and caution.
