The Miami Dolphins staged an impressive comeback after falling behind 14-0 in the opening quarter to secure a commanding 42-21 victory over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday at the Hard Rock Stadium.
Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa showcased his prowess by throwing for 262 yards and three touchdowns, earning an impressive passer rating of 126.0. Wide receiver Tyreek Hill continued his stellar performance from Week 5, amassing six receptions for 163 yards and a touchdown. The running game was led by Raheem Mostert, who contributed 115 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries.
Carolina, despite a rapid start, could not maintain their early momentum. They scored touchdowns on their initial two possessions and put the Dolphins on the back foot with a 14-0 lead. This, however, was the last time they would dominate.
Start of Miami resurgence
Miami’s resurgence began with a 27-yard completion from Tagovailoa to Hill as the first quarter concluded. In the ensuing plays, Tagovailoa connected with Mostert for a touchdown, aided by a crucial block from tight end Durham Smythe.
The Dolphins’ defence and special teams played a pivotal role when, on fourth-and-eight from the Carolina 49-yard line, linebacker Duke Riley and defensive back Elijah Campbell prevented a first-down conversion on a fake-punt pass, forcing a turnover.
This pivotal moment set the stage for a scoring spree by Miami. Tagovailoa connected with Jaylen Waddle for a touchdown, followed by a 41-yard touchdown pass to Hill. Two additional rushing touchdowns by Mostert turned the game around, giving the Dolphins a commanding 35-14 lead with 12:27 remaining.
Mostert dominates with 3 touchdowns
Carolina cornerback Troy Hill managed to narrow the gap with a 61-yard pick-six, bringing the score to 35-21 with 4:26 left. Nevertheless, the Dolphins swiftly responded with a nine-yard touchdown run by Salvon Ahmed, sealing their victory at 42-21.
Mostert’s three-touchdown performance brought his season total to a personal best of 11 touchdowns. Tagovailoa recorded his eighth game with at least three touchdown passes in his career. Defensively, Miami held Carolina to under 300 total yards of offense for the second consecutive game.
The Dolphins are set to face the Philadelphia Eagles (5-1) on the road in their next matchup on Sunday Night Football, scheduled for October 22 at 8:20 p.m. ET, with live broadcast on NBC.
