Cricket West Indies and the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) have expressed their heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Gibbs Williams, who tragically passed away on Friday.
Williams, 55, was a multifaceted figure in the sports world. He held a prominent role as the long-standing team manager of the Jamaica Under-19 cricket team and served as the team manager for the West Indies Rising Stars Men’s U19 squad, which recently toured Sri Lanka.
He was not only an educator, but also held the position of Vice-Principal at the G C Foster College of Physical Education and Sport in St. Catherine. Williams also spent over a decade working with grassroots and development programs in Jamaica as a Level 3 certified cricket coach as well as a strength and conditioning coach.
Williams tragically shot outside medical center
Williams was attacked shortly after 11:00 a.m., following an appointment at a medical facility, when witnesses reportedly heard explosions. Senior Superintendent Christopher Phillips, commander of the St. Catherine South police division, provided details at a briefing.
“After he left the facility, he went to his car that was parked on the compound, and after that, individuals reportedly heard explosions. He ran back into the facility and collapsed,” he said.
Tragically, Williams was pronounced dead at the Spanish Town Hospital.
The horrific manner of his passing has sent shockwaves throughout the sporting world, particularly within the cricket and track and field communities.
Andre Coley, head coach for the West Indies Men’s red ball team, spoke highly of Williams, describing him as “hard-working and dedicated.” Coley emphasized Williams’ positive mindset and the significant impact he had on various aspects of sports in Jamaica.
Unyielding commitment to cricket’s development
Robert Haynes, former Jamaica captain and West Indies all-rounder, who also serves as CWI Lead Selector for West Indies Men’s U19 Rising Stars, paid tribute to Williams, acknowledging his unwavering commitment to cricket’s growth and development. Haynes highlighted Williams’ passion for the game and his genuine respect for everyone he interacted with.
Robert Nurse, head coach of the West Indies Rising Stars Men’s Under-19 team, praised Williams for his ability to unite people and create an environment where players could flourish and improve.
The JAAA also expressed sorrow over the sudden and tragic loss. Their statement recognized him as a dedicated educator and a pillar of strength within the G C Foster College of Physical Education and Sport Community. It acknowledged his tireless efforts in promoting physical education and sports, as well as his genuine care for the welfare of the school community.
The sports community stands united in this difficult time to pay tribute to Gibbs Williams’ legacy and offer support to his loved ones, close friends, and the organizations he spent his life serving with commitment and distinction.
