JOHN’S, Antigua– Cricket West Indies (CWI) has unveiled its dynamic squad for the much-anticipated three-match T20 International (T20I) series against Bangladesh, promising an electrifying conclusion to the year’s cricketing calendar.
The series will unfold at the picturesque Arnos Vale Stadium in St. Vincent and the Grenadines from December 15 to December 19, 2024.
The return of seasoned batsman Johnson Charles, who has been sidelined for two series due to injury, marks a significant boost to the team’s top order. In a momentous milestone, the promising Keacy Carty has earned his maiden T20 International cap, bolstering the middle order after a spectacular showing in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).
The squad will be led by the inimitable Rovman Powell, with Brandon King serving as vice-captain. The announcement has injected a fresh wave of enthusiasm among fans eager to see the team end the year on a triumphant note.
Carty’s inclusion signals depth and promise
Keacy Carty’s inclusion has been hailed as a testament to his burgeoning talent, following his maiden international century against England last month. Head Coach Daren Sammy underscored Carty’s pivotal role in solidifying the batting line-up against a formidable Bangladesh side.
“Carty has shown us his mettle,” Sammy declared. “His adaptability and composure in the T20 format make him an invaluable addition, especially against a team as competitive as Bangladesh. We need everyone to step up, and his presence adds depth to our batting options.”
Balancing continuity and strategy
While the squad boasts depth and experience, notable absences include Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford, both committed to the Big Bash League. Akeal Hosein will also miss the final match of the series for similar obligations. Jayden Seales is set to step in as Hosein’s replacement for the concluding game.
Despite these adjustments, Sammy expressed confidence in the squad’s balance, crediting a deliberate selection process designed to build momentum heading into the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup.
“This is one of the most settled squads we’ve had,” Sammy stated. “The players’ cohesion, combined with the right mix of experience and fresh talent, gives us the edge to not only compete but to dominate.”
A festive finale for St. Vincent fans
The series holds special significance as the West Indies aim to give fans in St. Vincent and the Grenadines an unforgettable pre-Christmas gift.
“We’re determined to close the year on a high,” Sammy said with conviction. “This series is not just about cricket; it’s about bringing joy to the Caribbean people, especially those in St. Vincent, who didn’t get the chance to see us during the World Cup.”
As the squad gears up for battle, cricket enthusiasts across the region are brimming with anticipation, hoping to see the West Indies showcase the brilliance and flair that has defined their legacy.
