The West Indies Under-19 cricket team has arrived in South Africa with high hopes and strong confidence as they prepare to compete in the upcoming edition of the ICC Men’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup.
Led by their captain, Stephan Pascal, the team is gearing up for their opening match against the host nation, South Africa, scheduled for next Friday at the J.B. Marks Oval in Potchefstroom.
Pascal expressed the team’s readiness, highlighting their extensive preparation leading up to the tournament. The squad had valuable experience in Sri Lanka last year, participating in a five-match series. They further honed their skills through training camps held in Trinidad in November and at the Coolidge Cricket Ground in Antigua in December. These preparations have focused not only on cricket skills but also on fitness, strength, and overall physical conditioning.
Enthusiastic and closely-knit group
Pascal shared his excitement, stating, “We are very excited. We are an enthusiastic and closely-knit group of young cricketers who are very honored to represent the people of the West Indies and participate in this prestigious tournament. Over the years, this has been the stepping stone for many young players to launch their careers, so we all see this as a golden opportunity to perform on the world stage and do great things for the West Indies.”
The West Indies U-19 squad comprises several players who gained valuable experience in the 2022 World Cup, hosted in the West Indies. Among these talents are fast bowler Isai Thorne, left-handed all-rounder Nathan Edward, and left-handed batsman Jordan Johnson.
Thorne, in particular, made a significant impression with his recent first-class debut for the Cricket West Indies Academy against Emerging Ireland, where he showcased his pace and took 12 wickets in two matches.
Placed in Group ‘B’
In the upcoming ICC U-19 World Cup, the West Indies team finds itself placed in Group ‘B’ alongside South Africa, Scotland, and England for their first-round matches, all of which will be held at the J.B. Marks Oval. Ahead of these crucial encounters, they will participate in warm-up matches against New Zealand and Nepal in Johannesburg.
Pascal emphasized the importance of each match in their pursuit of reaching the final stages, especially the opening clash against South Africa, which carries the weight of anticipation and expectations. He highlighted the team’s well-balanced composition across all departments, their unity, and the unwavering belief within the camp, all contributing to their confidence in performing well in the tournament.
The top three teams from each first-round group will advance to the Super Six stage, which will be played from January 30 to February 3. The semi-finals are scheduled for February 6 and 8, with the final taking place on February 11 at Willowmore Park in Benoni.
As the West Indies U-19 squad gears up for their World Cup campaign, the cricketing world eagerly awaits their performances on the international stage, recognizing the tournament’s significance in shaping the careers of budding cricket stars.
