The second round fixture of the 2024 West Indies Championship between the Jamaica Scorpions and the Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) is finely balanced after an eventful day two at Sabina Park on Thursday.
At the close of play, the hosts, Jamaica Scorpions, were at 259-6 from 73.1 overs, trailing CCC by 48 runs on first innings. The standout performance of the day came from 38-year-old Chadwick Walton, who played his first season of first-class cricket since 2019.
Walton displayed masterful batting, scoring 168 off 245 balls, including 16 fours and five sixes. He formed a crucial 169-run opening partnership with Carlos Brown, who contributed 48 runs.
Scorpions’ batting line-up struggled otherwise
However, the Scorpions’ batting line-up struggled otherwise, with no other batsman making significant contributions. Seventeen-year-old leg-spinner Zishan Motara proved to be the main threat for CCC, taking four wickets for 69 runs from 22.1 overs.
Earlier in the day, CCC was bowled out for 307 off 97 overs, adding 47 runs to their overnight score. Jonathan Carter was the top scorer for CCC with an unbeaten 135 off 217 balls. He received support from Shamarh Brooks and Sion Hackett. The Scorpions’ bowlers, led by Gordon Bryan and Ojay Shields with three-wicket hauls each, restricted CCC’s total. Abhijai Mansingh also contributed with two wickets.
With the match evenly poised heading into day three, both teams will be eager to gain an advantage and push for victory in this closely contested encounter at Sabina Park.
