The Trinidad and Tobago chess team emerged triumphant at the inaugural Caricom Classic held at the Ramada Georgetown Princess Hotel in Guyana.
Led by Fide Masters Quinn Cabralis and Joshua Johnson, along with Woman Candidate Masters Zara La Fleur and Ysvett Hermoso Rodriguez, the TT squad showcased their collective prowess to clinch the gold medal.
Heading into the final day of competition with a lead over the hosts Guyana, the TT team displayed exceptional skill and determination to secure victory in the head-to-head matchup. Cabralis and La Fleur delivered standout performances, with La Fleur achieving a perfect score of nine points throughout the week-long competition.
Johnson’s contribution was vital as TT
Despite a draw in his final round match, Johnson’s contribution was vital as TT emerged victorious with 3.5 points to Guyana’s 0.5 points. The team finished with an impressive 31 out of a possible 36 points, showcasing their dominance in the round-robin format.
Acknowledging the stellar efforts of the TT chess squad, TT Chess Association President Sonja Johnson expressed immense pride in their performance and highlighted the camaraderie among team members. The success at the Caricom Classic bodes well for TT’s participation in the upcoming Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary.
