Taylor’s absence looms large as West Indies Women gear up for Indian tour

ST JOHN’S, Antigua — The West Indies Women’s cricket team faces a daunting challenge ahead of their highly anticipated white-ball tour of India, as seasoned all-rounder Stafanie Taylor has been ruled out due to a lingering knee injury.

The 33-year-old, a stalwart of West Indies cricket, has been sidelined since sustaining the injury during last month’s Women’s T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates. The setback forced Taylor to miss the final two games of the tournament, and her ongoing rehabilitation has rendered her unavailable for the three T20 Internationals and three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) scheduled against India.

A void in experience and leadership

Taylor’s absence is a significant blow to the Windies. With an illustrious record that includes 160 ODIs amassing 5,691 runs at an enviable average of 43.11, and 125 T20Is yielding 3,426 runs at 35.31, her consistency and leadership will be sorely missed. Her ability to anchor innings while providing breakthroughs with the ball has been an integral part of the team’s strategy for years.

Amid the setback, the team will welcome back dynamic all-rounder Deandra Dottin, whose recent form promises to inject much-needed firepower into the squad. Dottin, who returned to international cricket earlier this year after a two-year hiatus, is poised to make her ODI comeback during the Indian tour.

Her performance in the Women’s Big Bash League earlier this month showcased her destructive capabilities, where she smashed an unbeaten 46 off just 18 deliveries at a blistering strike rate of 255.55. This followed her impressive outing in the T20 World Cup, where she was named in the Team of the Tournament.

Squad reinforcements

The tour also marks the return of seamer Shabika Gajnabi and wicketkeeper-batter Rashada Williams, both of whom were absent from the T20 World Cup squad. Their inclusion bolsters the line-up, providing added depth in both formats as the team looks to rebuild its momentum without Taylor.

Cricket West Indies, in a statement, acknowledged the void left by Taylor but expressed confidence in the team’s ability to step up in her absence.

As the West Indies Women prepare to face India on home soil, the series will test their resilience and adaptability. With Taylor’s absence leaving a leadership vacuum, the team will lean on the experience of Dottin and other senior players to guide them through this pivotal series.
