Former Reggae Boyz striker and 1998 World Cup qualification hero Deon Burton has officially joined the coaching staff of the Reggae Girlz as head coach Hubert Busby Jr. named his squad for their upcoming international friendly against France.
Burton, known for his pivotal role in Jamaica’s historic qualification for the 1998 World Cup, will assist Busby in sharpening the team’s attacking play, bringing his wealth of experience as a UEFA A license holder to the table.
Burton, who led the Reggae Boyz with four goals in the final round of the 1998 CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers, will make his debut on the Reggae Girlz bench next Friday when the team faces European powerhouse France. This marks a significant addition to Busby’s coaching staff as the team gears up for competitive international fixtures.
Missed the last nine matches for Jamaica
The squad will be without captain and star forward Khadijah “Bunny” Shaw, who has missed the last nine matches for Jamaica, with her last appearance being in the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying playoff against Canada in September last year. Despite her absence, the Reggae Girlz squad remains strong, featuring familiar faces and rising stars.
The 22-member squad for the France match includes: Goalkeepers: Rebecca Spencer, Sydney Schneider. Defenders: Chantelle Swaby, Allyson Swaby, Taylor Hinds, Daneisha Blackwood, Vyan Sampson, Maliah Atkins. Midfielders: Lulu Jarvis, Atlanta Primus, Jade Bailey, Drew Spence, Sade Adamolekun, Reanna Blades. Forwards: Natasha Thomas, Paige Bailey-Gayle, Kayla McKenna, Jody Brown, Shania Hayles, Tiffany Cameron, Davia Richards, and Mickayla Dayes.
Burton’s appointment adds a new dynamic to the coaching team, with expectations high for improved offensive strategies under his guidance. The Reggae Girlz will look to put in a strong performance against France, continuing their preparations for upcoming tournaments.
