Pollard’s MI Emirates storm into ILT20 final with commanding win

SHARJAH — Kieron Pollard’s MI Emirates delivered a ruthless performance on Friday night, overpowering Jason Holder’s Abu Dhabi Knight Riders by seven wickets to seal their place in the International League T20 final.

The emphatic victory in Qualifier 2 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium left little doubt about the Emirates’ readiness for the season’s ultimate stage.

Knight Riders falter after being sent in

After losing the toss and being asked to bat, the Knight Riders never found momentum. Alishan Sharafu offered lone resistance with an unbeaten half-century, while Alex Hales contributed 29, but the rest of the line-up failed to apply any sustained pressure. Abu Dhabi limped to 120 for eight from their allotted 20 overs, a total that never threatened the opposition.

The collapse was compounded by the struggles of the West Indian trio. Sunil Narine managed just four, Andre Russell added three, and Holder was dismissed for one, underscoring a disappointing collective effort with the bat.

Emirates bowlers apply the squeeze

MI Emirates’ disciplined bowling attack dictated terms throughout the innings. AM Ghazanfar led the charge with figures of three for 24, while Muhammad Rohid (two for 19) and Fazalhaq Farooqi (two for 30) ensured there was no late recovery. Tight lines, controlled pace, and sharp fielding combined to keep the Knight Riders firmly in check.

In response, the Emirates stumbled briefly but never lost control. Tom Banton anchored the chase with a composed, unbeaten 63 from 53 balls, striking six fours and a six. He found an ideal partner in Shakib Al Hasan, who played fluently for his 38.

Together, the pair forged a decisive 82-run stand for the third wicket, calmly rebuilding after the early loss of two wickets with the score at 36. Their partnership carried MI Emirates to 121 for three in just 16.1 overs, sealing a comprehensive victory.

With the win, Pollard’s side advances to Sunday’s final, where they will face the Desert Vipers at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. After a dominant showing in Sharjah, MI Emirates head into the championship match brimming with confidence and momentum.
