Former NBA player Udonis Haslem, who retired just five months ago, is set to take on a new role with the Miami Heat in their front office.
Haslem, who had spent his entire 20-season NBA career with the Heat, has been named the team’s Vice President of Basketball Development. In this newly created position, Haslem’s responsibilities will extend to various aspects of the organization.
One of the key aspects of Haslem’s role will be serving as a mentor to both Heat players and those from the G League Sioux Falls Skyforce. He will also act as a valuable resource for the coaching staff, particularly aiding Head Coach Erik Spoelstra. Furthermore, Haslem will represent the Heat in community engagements and business ventures.
Haslem’s appointment aligns him with other former Heat players who have transitioned into roles within the organization, such as Alonzo Mourning, Shane Battier, Caron Butler, Malik Allen, Chris Quinn, Wayne Ellington, Keith Askins, and Glen Rice.
Pat Riley happy with Haslem’s decision
Miami Heat President Pat Riley expressed his satisfaction with Haslem’s decision, stating, “Born and raised in Miami, UD has been an integral part of the success of the HEAT for 20 years. It’s great that he has chosen to continue to build on his incredible legacy here in Miami, where he belongs.”
Despite his varied interests in philanthropy and business ventures outside of basketball, Haslem has consistently expressed his desire to maintain a close connection to the Heat and has even voiced interest in owning a stake in the team. Notably, he had also explored broadcasting opportunities with CBS Sports HQ and Turner Broadcasting.
Haslem served as the Heat’s captain for 16 seasons and was succeeded by Bam Adebayo in that role this season. The Heat has announced plans to retire Haslem’s No. 40 jersey later in the season, a testament to his enduring impact on the franchise. Haslem himself has emphasized that his connection to the Heat is permanent, declaring, “This is a forever thing. There’s too much love here. There’s too many sacrifices. There’s too much success.”
Coach Spoelstra echoed the sentiment, describing Haslem as a symbol of Heat culture. He highlighted Haslem’s commitment to mentoring and supporting young players, both on and off the court, as a defining characteristic of the Heat’s culture.
Several milestones with the Heat
Adebayo, the young player who succeeded Haslem as team captain, welcomed the continued presence of the Heat legend, recognizing the value of his mentorship and the positive impact it has on the team.
Throughout his illustrious career, Haslem achieved several milestones with the Heat, including becoming the franchise’s all-time leader in offensive, defensive, and total rebounds. He is also the only undrafted player in NBA history to hold the title of their team’s all-time rebound leader. His impressive career statistics place him among the league’s top players in various categories, solidifying his legacy as a Heat icon.
Additionally, Haslem boasts 147 postseason appearances, the most by an undrafted player in NBA history, and has contributed to three NBA championship victories with the Heat in 2006, 2012, and 2013.
