In a resounding comeback, the Melbourne Renegades clinched their first victory in the 2023 Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) campaign by defeating the Adelaide Strikers by a commanding margin of 86 runs. This showdown unfolded at the Junction Oval in Melbourne on Monday.
After a defeat in their season opener against the Brisbane Heat, the Renegades were eager to set the record straight. Sent in to bat by the Strikers, they posted a formidable total of 167-3 from their allotted 20 overs.
The Renegades’ opening pair, Tammy Beaumont and captain Hayley Matthews, managed a modest 19-run partnership before the West Indian captain departed for 12 runs in the third over. Beaumont and the number three batter, Josephine Dooley, then forged a steady partnership, contributing 51 runs for the second wicket. Beaumont was eventually dismissed for a solid 30 in the ninth over. Shortly thereafter, Dooley fell for 23, leaving the Renegades at 74-3.
Unbroken 93-run, fourth-wicket partnership
The pivotal moment of the innings came in the form of an unbroken 93-run, fourth-wicket partnership between Harmanpreet Kaur and Courtney Webb. Their exceptional performance propelled the Renegades to their challenging total. Webb led the way with an impressive 34-ball 49, while Kaur added an invaluable 43 off 33 balls.
Zimbabwean bowler Anesu Mushangwe stood out as the Strikers’ most economical bowler, managing figures of 1-21 in her four overs.
When it came to their turn at the crease, the Strikers could only muster 14.5 overs before they were bowled out for a mere 86 runs. Skipper Talia McGrath (31), Laura Woldvaart (14), and Danielle Gibson (10) were the only Strikers’ players to reach double figures.
The Renegades’ bowlers played an essential role in securing the victory. Hayley Matthews (2-20 from three overs), Ella Hayward (2-18 from four overs), Georgia Wareham (2-23 from three overs), and Harmanpreet Kaur (2-11 from 1.5 overs) combined effectively to dismantle the Strikers’ batting line-up.
