MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA — In a dazzling display of skill and poise, West Indies Women’s captain Hayley Matthews powered the Melbourne Renegades to their first-ever Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) championship.
The Renegades clinched a rain-affected thriller, defeating the Brisbane Heat by seven runs in front of a raucous crowd at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday.
Matthews delivered a stellar all-around performance, smashing an authoritative 69 off 61 balls before claiming two pivotal wickets in a game defined by tension and momentum shifts. Her brilliance guided the Renegades to a defendable 141 for nine, which was later adjusted to a target of 98 from 12 overs under the DLS method due to a 33-minute rain delay.
The triumph capped a remarkable turnaround for the Renegades, a team that had languished at the bottom of the table last season. After a shaky start to this campaign, including three losses in their first five matches, the Renegades roared back with a six-game winning streak to claim the ultimate prize.
Matthews anchors the Renegades’ innings
On a surface demanding resilience and timing, Matthews stood tall, anchoring the Renegades’ innings with a composed yet commanding knock. The Barbadian star built a crucial 41-run partnership with Georgia Wareham (21 off 21), stabilizing the innings after early setbacks.
Her calculated aggression came to the fore during the Power Surge, where she launched a flurry of boundaries off Shikha Pandey, accelerating the Renegades’ score at a critical juncture. Matthews then partnered with Naomi Stalenburg (16) for a 45-run stand, ensuring the Renegades had a competitive total despite Charlie Knott’s superb 3-for-28 bowling spell for the Heat.
Reaching her half-century in 47 balls, Matthews added a final flourish before falling for a brilliant 69, a knock that included eight boundaries and showcased her knack for rising to the occasion.
Heat stumble in chasing revised target
The Brisbane Heat’s chase began in shambles, with WBBL veteran Grace Harris departing for a golden duck in the very first over. Jemimah Rodrigues followed shortly, dismissed for one, leaving the Heat reeling at 15 for two.
After the rain break, the target was revised, but the Heat struggled to recover. Georgia
Redmayne (16) offered a glimmer of hope before falling to Sophie Molineux, and the Renegades seized control. Matthews returned in the seventh over, showcasing her bowling prowess by dismissing Charli Knott (7) and Laura Harris (0) off consecutive deliveries, effectively breaking the Heat’s back.
Deandra Dottin’s 10th over briefly reignited the Heat’s hopes as Jess Jonassen struck a six and a four, but Dottin responded with the crucial wicket of Lauren Winfield-Hill (3), leaving the Heat with a mountain to climb.
Molineux seals the deal
With 30 runs required off the last two overs, the Heat’s chances dwindled. Captain Sophie Molineux, calm under pressure, bowled a masterful final over, conceding just 11 runs and sealing a historic victory for the Renegades.
The Renegades’ journey from underdogs to champions was epitomized by Matthews’ player-of-the-match performance. “It’s been an incredible journey,” Matthews said post-match. “To see this team bounce back the way we have is nothing short of amazing. Everyone played their part today, and it’s a moment we’ll cherish forever.”
