Marley Foundations inject JM$500K into Jamaica’s youth netball dream

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The rhythmic beat of Jamaican philanthropy echoed through Netball Jamaica’s headquarters this week as the Bob & Rita Marley Foundations unveiled a JM $500,000 donation to power the national Under‑21 squad’s march toward the 2025 Netball World Youth Cup in Gibraltar, slated for September 19–28.

A first‑time sponsorship with deep roots

Announcing the contribution, Cedella Marley, chief executive officer of the twin foundations, framed the gift as both a tribute to sporting excellence and an investment in Jamaica’s future.

“Sport has the power to transform lives, and these young athletes represent the strength and future of Jamaica,” she declared. “Netball builds character, unity, and national pride. We’re honoured to support their mission and help them shine on the world stage.”

While the Marley organizations have championed grassroots sport for decades, this marks their first direct sponsorship of a netball training initiative—a milestone that underscores the game’s burgeoning appeal across the island.

Building the pipeline to Sunshine glory

Jamaica’s Under‑21 squad, often dubbed the “Young Sunshine Girls,” carries a rich pedigree. The team bagged silver in Cardiff (2000) and bronze in Glasgow (2013), achievements that fed directly into the senior Sunshine Girls’ rise to global prominence.

Guided by Head Coach Annett Daley and Assistant Coach Nardia Hanson, the current crop is locked in a rigorous build‑up: weekly local‑league fixtures, specialized skills work, and a high‑intensity July Summer Camp that doubles as their final tuning session before departure.

Where the funds will flow

The half‑million dollars will underwrite essentials that go far beyond air tickets and lodging:

  • Nutritional support to keep the athletes fueled for punishing twice‑a‑day sessions.
  • Injury‑prevention equipment—from compression wear to physiotherapy aids—aimed at keeping Jamaica’s brightest prospects on court rather than in the treatment room.
  • Training‑camp logistics, including venue hire, performance analytics, and wellness monitoring.
  • Specialised footwear—the subtle but crucial difference between exploding off the line and sliding off balance.

“These resources will allow the girls to focus solely on peak performance,” Daley noted. “When players know their physical needs are met, the mental game can flourish.”

A broader vision of community‑driven sport

The cheque follows close on the heels of the Foundations’ JM $4.5 million multi‑purpose court unveiled at Trench Town Community Centre in May, a tangible reminder that Marley philanthropy is as concerned with community roots as with elite branches.

“From Trench Town’s asphalt to Gibraltar’s hardwood, we want every Jamaican child to see possibility,” Cedella Marley added. “Netball’s next global heroes could come from anywhere—if the pathway is clear.”

With the Marley anthem of unity now ringing in their ears—and their travel kitty suitably replenished—Jamaica’s Under‑21s can turn all eyes to Europe, determined to convert financial backing into medal‑winning brilliance. The journey to Gibraltar begins in earnest; the dream of gold, however, has already taken flight.
