GROS ISLET, St Lucia – St Lucia Kings reignited their Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) campaign with a commanding five-wicket win over the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots, handing the Patriots their sixth consecutive defeat.
In front of a roaring crowd at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground, the Kings chased down a target of 174 with 21 balls to spare, thanks to standout performances from captain Faf du Plessis and opener Johnson Charles.
The Kings, eager to turn their season around, made a strong statement from the toss. Du Plessis chose to bowl first, banking on favorable second-half batting conditions and hoping the ball would skid on under the lights. However, despite solid resistance from Patriots’ captain Andre Fletcher and a late flurry of sixes from Rilee Rossouw, the Patriots could only muster 173-5 in their 20 overs.
A gritty 62 off 50 balls
Fletcher led the way for his side, anchoring the innings with a gritty 62 off 50 balls. However, his subdued strike rate ultimately cost the Patriots vital momentum, a fact Fletcher acknowledged after the game. “We started well in the powerplay but slowed down in the middle. Our strike rate could have been better, especially me. Rilee’s knock helped, but it wasn’t enough,” said Fletcher.
Rossouw’s fireworks came too late to significantly boost the Patriots, as the Kings’ bowlers kept them in check for most of the innings. Rossouw smashed five sixes in a quickfire 37, but the Patriots’ inability to consistently clear the boundary, particularly in the middle overs, left them short of a truly competitive total.
The Kings’ response was emphatic. Du Plessis and Charles took control from the start, with the former laying the foundation for a successful chase with a blistering 46 off 22 balls. Du Plessis’ knock, featuring five boundaries and five sixes, set the tone during the PowerPlay, allowing the Kings to keep the required run rate well within reach. Even after du Plessis’ dismissal, Charles continued to dominate, playing a match-winning knock of 74 off 42 balls.
“It was a very good innings. I would have loved to finish off for the team,” said Player-of-the-Match Charles after the victory. “Opening with Faf has been great. We feed off each other’s energy, and it’s always special when we have the crowd behind us.”
Powerful hitting
Charles’ powerful hitting, coupled with contributions from Colin Munro and Roston Chase, ensured that the Kings coasted home with ease, the target reduced to single digits before Charles finally fell to Wanindu Hasaranga.
For the Patriots, the loss was another bitter blow in a season that has quickly spiraled out of control. “We have three games left, and we don’t have a choice but to go out there and play cricket. We have to find a way to win,” said a dejected Fletcher. “We’ve been on the losing side for six games, and we have to try our best.”
The Kings, meanwhile, will take great confidence from their victory as they push for a spot in the playoffs, while the Patriots’ hopes of progression are now hanging by a thread, reliant on other results falling in their favor.
