With the nation’s surfers facing funding woes ahead of the upcoming World Championship in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, the JOA’s timely intervention ensures they can compete on the global stage.

Responding to an urgent plea from the Jamaica Surfing Association, which highlighted the non-materialization of promised funding from the Sports Development Foundation (SDF), the JOA not only fulfilled its initial commitment of a JMD$800,000 cash injection but went above and beyond by providing an additional JMD$400,000.

Generous intervention bridges the financial gap

This generous intervention bridges the financial gap, empowering the aspiring surfers to showcase their talents at the World Championship scheduled from February 23 to March 3, 2024.

Icah Wilmot, President of the Jamaica Surfing Association, expressed heartfelt gratitude, acknowledging the JOA’s support and assistance. He emphasized their readiness to represent the nation with excellence and aim for qualification spots at the 2024 Olympic Games.

Surfing has been steadily gaining momentum locally, underscoring its Olympic and Paralympic credentials and attracting the attention and support of the JOA. President Christopher Samuda shared an optimistic outlook, emphasizing the end of the storm and the emergence of light and liberty on the horizon.

JOA’s commitment

Meanwhile, JOA Secretary General/CEO, Ryan Foster, reiterated the association’s unwavering support, affirming their commitment to providing Jamaica’s accomplished surfing ambassadors with the opportunity to excel on the global stage.

As several sports aim to qualify for the Paris Olympic Games, the JOA’s timely intervention exemplifies its dedication to fostering excellence in sports. By ensuring athletes across diverse disciplines have the necessary support and resources, the JOA continues to play a vital role in empowering Jamaica’s sporting community and promoting success on the international stage.
