In a display of exceptional athleticism, Lamara Distin of Texas A&M made history at the South-Eastern Conference (SEC) indoor championships by becoming the first female high jumper in NCAA history to clear 2.00m (6-6.75) at the Tyson Sports Complex in Fayetteville on Saturday.
The 22-year-old Distin, a gold medalist at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and a finalist at last year’s World Championships, showcased her class and outstanding form with her winning mark. Not only did she surpass her previous national record of 1.97m set last year, but she also shattered her own meet record of 1.95m and equaled the facility record.
Additionally, Distin’s achievement surpassed the previous championship record of 1.98m set by Hooker Tex in 2016.
Distin secured the top spot ahead of Arkansas’ Rachel Glenn (1.94m) and University of Georgia’s Elena Kulichenko (1.91m), while fellow Jamaican Nia Robinson of Arkansas set a new personal best mark of 1.75m, finishing 12th in the competition.
Meet record-equalling time of 7.08 seconds
In the men’s high jump event, Jamaica’s Romaine Beckford, representing Arkansas, emerged victorious after clearing the bar at 2.25m. He outperformed Mississippi State’s Sherman Hawkins (2.16m) and Texas A&M’s Ushan Perera (2.11m) to claim the top spot.
Meanwhile, on the track, Brianna Lyston of Louisiana State University continued her impressive form by clocking a meet record-equalling time of 7.08 seconds to win the women’s 60m final. Her time matched the record set by another Jamaican, Remona Burchell of the University of Alabama, in 2015.
The outstanding performances of Distin, Beckford, and Lyston showcased the depth of talent among Jamaican athletes and reaffirmed their prowess on the international stage.
