Jamaica schools dominate field events on opening day at 127th Penn Relays

Jamaican schools continued their dominance of the field events at the 127th Penn Relays Carnival inside the Franklyn Field at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia on Thursday.

Of the six field events that the Jamaican schools participated in, they won watches in four of the events, while finishing second and third, and third in the other two events.

In the High School Boys’ shot put Championship, Calabar High School’s Kobe Lawrence took first place with a best throw of 20.93m, with St Jago High School’s Shaiquan Dunn claiming third place with 18.07m.

Second place went to Joshua Huisman of St Rose out of New Jersey. He registered 19.40m.

Chavez Grey of William Knibb High School finished in seventh place with 16.57m, and Calabar’s Antoine Walker finished in 14th place with 15.56m.

It was a similar first- and third-place finish in the High School Boys’ long jump with Demario Prince of St Jago High winning with 7.42m and KC’s Nathan Wade claiming third with 7.22m.

Camren Williams of Archbishop John Carroll out of DC finished second with 7.32m.

The Wolmer’s pair of Nando Meggs (6.83m) and Mark Phillips (6.83m) finished sixth and seventh, respectively, while JC’s Uroy Ryan and St Jago’s Balvin Israel did not compete.

The High School Boys’ triple jump took a similar pattern with JC’s Trevon Hamer taking the watch with 15.17m, and KC’s Javar Thomas taking third place with 14.81m.

Second place went to Ty’heak Buie of Potomac out of Virginia, with 14.88m.

Cornwall College’s Kesean-Jordan Rhooms (13.62m) was eighth; schoolmate Obrien Bowen finished 10th with 13.52m; Wolmer’s Darnell Nelson was 12th with 13.35m and his schoolmate Najhayne Watson 13th with 13.34m.

JC’s Euan Young did not compete.

Gabriel Lim of JC took the main prize in the High School Boys’ javelin Championship with a mark of 61.24m.

St George’s College’s Deandre Bristol was 11th with 51.18m, as JC’s Dorian Charles and Petersfield High’s Quewayne Brown did not compete.

In the High School Boys’ high jump, the KC pair of Asaiah Patrick and Aaron McKenzie had to settle for second and third places, respectively, after clearing a height of 1.98m, each.

The event was won by Ja’Mari Manson of Bloomfield out of Connecticut, also with a clearance of 1.98m.  The JC duo of Chavez Penn and Jaidi James did not compete.

The High School Boys’ Discus Championship resulted in a victory for Nathan Villegas-Reyes of University Garden out of Puerto Rico with 62.49m.

Second place went to Fabian Gonzalez of Southern Regional out of New Jersey with 61.94m, with JC’s Racquil Broderick claiming third place with 61.92m.

Ricardo Hayles of Clarendon College was fifth with 58.90m; Yekini Bowen of Petersfield High was sixth with 56.31m; Calabar’s Delano Lawrence was 12th with 49.89m, while JC’s Zachary Campbell did not compete.

The High School Girls field events will take place on Friday with Jamaican schools again strongly represented in five of the seven events.
