The Jamaica Hockey Federation (JHF) is embarking on a historic journey to secure a spot in the upcoming International Hockey Federation (FIH) men’s Hockey5s World Cup, scheduled from January 28 to 31 in Muscat, Oman.
This marks the first time in over a century that Jamaica will participate in any form of FIH World Cup. However, significant financial obstacles threaten the national team’s participation in this historic event.
The JHF aims to raise $5 million to cover the costs associated with the national team’s participation. While the Jamaican government and the Jamaica Olympic Association (JOA) have contributed a combined $3 million, corporate support has been lacking. The initial budget for team preparation, including coaching, training equipment, nutrition, and international games, was set at $32 million. Due to a shortage of funds, the budget has been significantly reduced.
Significance of the tournament
JHF President Fabian Stewart emphasizes the importance of this tournament for Jamaica and the Caribbean region as a whole. Additional funding is needed to cover travel and logistical expenses, including nearly $7 million for airfare to Oman and close to $2 million for accommodation. Despite these financial challenges, the JHF is committed to ensuring Jamaican representation in the tournament.
Jamaica is placed in Pool B of the World Cup, competing against strong teams such as Egypt, India, and Switzerland. The journey ahead is undoubtedly challenging, but the JHF remains hopeful. With the necessary support and resources, the Jamaican team has the potential to leave a significant mark on the international stage, potentially shaping the future of hockey in the Caribbean region.
