Derby, England – England Women surged to a commanding 108-run victory over West Indies Women in the opening One Day International (ODI) on Friday.
Powered by a dazzling batting display from Amy Jones and Tammy Beaumont, followed by a dream debut from Linsey Smith, whose five-wicket haul decimated the West Indies batting line-up.
At the Derbyshire County Ground, the hosts posted an imposing 345 for six, their eighth-highest total in Women’s ODI history, after electing to bat first. Jones’ career-best 122 and Beaumont’s clinical 107 laid the foundation, with the pair forging a monumental 222-run opening partnership—the third-highest in WODI history.
Near misses and masterstrokes: Jones and Beaumont dominate
The duo navigated early threats with composure and flair. Beaumont was first to reach her milestone, carving Karishma Ramharack through point to bring up her 11th ODI century from 96 balls. Jones followed in emphatic style, driving Cherry-Ann Fraser through extra cover to raise her maiden century, a knock that featured 15 fours and a six across 121 deliveries.
Despite surviving two dropped chances while in the 90s—by Jahzara Claxton and Ramharack—Jones capitalized fully, punishing the bowlers with her full array of strokes.
Fraser eventually ended the marathon stand, bowling Beaumont for 107 (104 balls, 8 fours, 4 sixes), while Hayley Matthews struck twice in quick succession, removing Emma Lamb for two and Jones shortly after.
Sciver-Brunt ignites final surge
Captain Nat Sciver-Brunt injected late momentum, smashing a rapid 52 off 36 balls to accelerate England’s scoring. Her effort helped the hosts plunder 92 runs in the final 10 overs, giving them an unassailable total.
Matthews stood out with the ball, returning a tidy 2-29 from 10 overs, while Afy Fletcher chipped in with 2-65.
Bright start, swift collapse: West Indies’ chase falters
In reply, West Indies Women launched their pursuit in bold fashion. Matthews (48) and Qiana Joseph (62) carved out a promising 91-run opening stand in under 15 overs, offering a glimmer of hope in chasing the mammoth total.
But that promise quickly unraveled.
Em Arlott, also on debut, broke the stand when she had Matthews caught behind with a superb outswinger. Joseph battled on to reach her second ODI half-century, but she received little support.
Linsey Smith’s spell of dreams
The match’s turning point came with the introduction of Linsey Smith, whose left-arm spin dismantled the middle order. She struck quickly, trapping Zaida James lbw for seven, before bowling Shemaine Campbelle and Mandy Mangru in quick succession.
England’s spinners maintained relentless pressure as Alice Capsey bowled Joseph for 62 (74 balls, 9 fours), triggering a collapse from 124 for two to 147 for five.
Though Aaliyah Alleyne fought back with a spirited 44 off 46, and brief cameos from Shabika Gajnabi and Jahzara Claxton offered resistance, the chase ultimately withered.
Smith finished with a sensational 5-36 from 10 overs, a dream debut performance that sealed England’s emphatic win. Arlott added 2-37, ensuring the visitors were bowled out for 237 in 48.2 overs.
Looking ahead
With confidence surging and momentum squarely in their favor, England Women will look to extend their dominance in the upcoming matches of the series. For West Indies, flashes of promise must now translate into consistency, particularly in the middle order, if they are to mount a comeback.
