Castries, St. Lucia – Despite back-to-back defeats in the first two T20 matches against England, West Indies head coach Daren Sammy remains optimistic that his squad has the depth and talent needed to mount a comeback in the remaining three games.
As England currently leads the five-match series 2-0, the West Indies must win the next three games, beginning Thursday at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground in St. Lucia, to secure the series victory.
Sammy, a former West Indies captain and veteran of the game, believes the players have the capability to rise to the occasion. “Most definitely, especially here in St. Lucia,” he asserted. “Yes, England has played better cricket in the first two games, but I’ve rallied St. Lucia to come out and be that extra 12th man. The guys have just not played the brand of cricket that has allowed us to win, and it’s something we are going to address. We have the manpower in that dressing room to win on Thursday and take it one game at a time.”
Significant changes to the team line-up
The series has already seen significant changes to the team line-up. Star all-rounder Andre Russell has been ruled out due to an ankle injury sustained in the opening game, a setback Sammy acknowledges is difficult to navigate. “Replacing someone like Andre Russell is always a challenge—he brings so much with his bowling, batting, and fielding,” Sammy noted. “His experience on the field is invaluable, but we’re ready to adapt.”
In Russell’s absence, 26-year-old Shamar Springer has stepped up as his replacement. Springer, known for his dynamic play, made his debut in Sri Lanka and is regarded as an exciting young talent. “Shamar has the potential to contribute well, and this is a great opportunity for him to show what he’s capable of at the international level,” Sammy remarked.
Alzarri Joseph, the team’s leading fast bowler, will rejoin the squad following a two-game suspension, adding much-needed experience to the line-up. Sammy expressed eagerness to see Joseph back on the pitch, praising the balance his presence will bring. “We’re looking forward to welcoming Alzarri back and having his skills on our side. His experience and speed are key assets,” said Sammy.
Although the task ahead is formidable, Sammy maintains faith in his players and is calling on fans in St. Lucia to be the “extra 12th man” as they strive to level the series. With talent and resilience on their side, the West Indies are preparing to prove they have what it takes to turn the tide.
