Cricket West Indies (CWI) has extended its heartfelt gratitude to Sunil Narine for his exceptional contributions to West Indies cricket throughout his international career. The renowned spin bowler recently announced his retirement from both international and regional List A cricket, just ahead of Trinidad & Tobago Red Force’s final preliminary match in the CG United Super50 Cup.
Narine, aged 35, made his debut for West Indies in 2011 during a tour of India and marked his final appearance against India in Guyana in 2019. Over the course of his career, he donned the West Indies colors in a total of 122 matches, including 6 Test matches, 65 appearances in One-Day Internationals (ODIs), and 51 in T20 Internationals (T20Is).
One of the highlights of Narine’s career was his role as a key member of the West Indies team that secured victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2012, triumphing over Sri Lanka at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Narine’s performance with the ball, where he secured three crucial wickets, significantly contributed to the West Indies’ 36-run victory in the final.
Standout performer in all three formats
Narine showcased his versatility by representing the West Indies in all three formats of the game. In six Test matches, he managed to claim 21 wickets, with his best bowling figures of 6-91 against New Zealand in Hamilton. In the ODIs, he bagged 92 wickets, including a remarkable best of 6-27 against South Africa in Guyana in 2016. Furthermore, he proved his prowess in T20 Internationals by taking 52 wickets in 51 matches, with a standout performance of 4-12 against New Zealand in Fort Lauderdale in 2012, which played a pivotal role in securing a series victory.
Miles Bascombe, CWI Director of Cricket, expressed his appreciation, saying, “On behalf of CWI, I would like to thank Sunil Narine for his contribution to West Indies during his time on the international stage. He was the kind of bowler who excited fans and brought them to the game. He was the ‘X’ factor in the West Indies bowling attack and produced some amazing spells. When at his best, he ranked among the very best in the modern era. We all remember the magical bowling performance in Sri Lanka, when he helped the West Indies to their first T20 World Cup title. As he continues his playing career, we wish him more success.”
Sunil Narine is currently part of the Trinidad & Tobago Red Force squad for the first Semi-Final of the CG United 50 Cup, scheduled for Wednesday, November 8, at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy. There is a possibility that he may make his final List A appearance on Saturday, November 11, in the Final match. Cricket enthusiasts can catch the Semi-Finals and Final live on ESPN Caribbean.
