ST JOHN’S, Antigua – West Indies Women’s Head Coach Shane Deitz is approaching the upcoming white-ball series against Bangladesh Women with cautious optimism, viewing it as a pivotal moment to evaluate his team’s progress following a challenging tour of India last month.
Despite a lackluster performance in India, where they lost the T20I series 2-1 and were whitewashed 3-0 in the ODIs, the Windies Women aim to bounce back during Bangladesh’s historic first tour of the Caribbean. With three ODIs and three T20Is slated for Warner Park in Basseterre, St. Kitts, the series offers a fresh start and a critical test of the team’s mettle.
A strategic opportunity for growth
“Bangladesh’s visit comes at an ideal time in our preparation cycle,” Deitz explained, emphasizing the importance of the series. “They’re a skilled unit that has shown impressive growth, and this series gives us an excellent opportunity to examine our squad depth and continue to implement our aggressive, flamboyant brand of West Indian cricket.”
He added, “We have been focusing on specific areas of improvement in our training and touring, and these matches will help us gauge our progress. The conditions at Warner Park will challenge both teams and make for compelling cricket. I’m looking forward to seeing how some of our younger and less-experienced players respond to the test.”
Historic rivalry meets new beginnings
The two teams last clashed during the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 in the United Arab Emirates, where the West Indies triumphed with a commanding eight-wicket victory in Sharjah. In ODIs, their most recent meeting three years ago in New Zealand ended in a nail-biting four-run win for the Windies. Notably, West Indies hold an undefeated record against Bangladesh in five encounters across formats, including four T20Is and one ODI.
The Windies will be led by the dynamic Hayley Matthews, who shoulders the responsibility of rallying the team in the absence of veteran Stafanie Taylor, sidelined by a persistent knee injury. The squad features the return of emerging talents Jannillea Glasgow and Cherry Ann Fraser, fresh off their successful stints in Tasmania’s state cricket system.
