SHARJAH, United Arab Emirates – Following a narrow defeat to New Zealand in the T20 World Cup semi-finals, West Indies head coach Shane Deitz commended his team for their unwavering spirit and tenacity.
The West Indies fell short by just eight runs in a match marked by significant injuries within the squad.
Throughout the tournament, the team faced various challenges, including the limited bowling of star all-rounder Deandra Dottin due to a side strain and Stafanie Taylor’s ongoing knee issues that hampered her performance.
“It’s been quite emotional for us in recent days,” Deitz reflected. “After an incredible victory against England, we had to quickly regroup. The girls handled that transition admirably. Their passion for representing the West Indies shines through, and they give their all every time they step onto the pitch. Witnessing that level of commitment is truly moving.”
Praised Taylor for her perseverance
Deitz specifically praised Taylor for her perseverance, noting how she fought through her injury during the crucial match. “The medical staff did a fantastic job managing her situation. She battled pain daily, but her determination was inspiring. Today, she looked better than she had in weeks. It was truly a case of mind over matter. Although she couldn’t lead us to victory, her effort for the team deserves immense respect and gratitude.”
Despite missing out on the final, the West Indies had a commendable tournament, finishing at the top of Group B and eliminating one of the world’s strongest teams, England, in the process.
Beginning the competition with a disappointing 10-wicket loss to South Africa and struggling with prior performances, the team still managed to showcase their skills at crucial moments.
“Over the past year, we’ve been honing a style of play that reflects the true essence of West Indies cricket,” Deitz explained. “We aim to play with our characteristic flair and confidence, rather than relying on opponents to falter. We aspire to take control of the game on our terms. While we are still building, we’ve made significant progress. By the time the next T20 World Cup arrives in 2026, we intend to be prepared to challenge for the title once more.”
