Shanikie Osbourne, the coach at the center of a dispute with Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah’s management, strongly denied allegations made by the management regarding her compensation for preparing Thompson-Herah for the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
In a comprehensive account during an interview with SportsMax media outlet, Osbourne rejected claims of asking for unreasonable compensation and emphasized her willingness to engage in negotiations.
Osbourne was brought on board in July after Thompson-Herah’s underwhelming performance at the Jamaica national championships, where she finished fifth in the 100m finals with a time of 11.06 seconds. Osbourne’s impact was immediate, as the five-time Olympic gold medalist achieved five consecutive season-best times: 11.00, 10.92, 10.84, and 10.79 seconds, culminating in a third-place finish at the season-ending Diamond League final in Eugene, Oregon.
Initially, things appeared to be progressing well between Thompson-Herah and Coach Osbourne, with negotiations for a new long-term arrangement commencing in late September or early October. However, on Wednesday, Thompson-Herah’s agents at Andi Sports Management released a statement announcing the end of the athlete’s relationship with Coach Osbourne.
A big lie
The statement from Thompson-Herah’s agents cited a breakdown in negotiations over a compensation package for Coach Osbourne’s services as the reason for the professional separation, characterizing Osbourne’s proposed package as “extremely excessive and without any flexibility to negotiate by the other party.”
In response, Coach Osbourne vehemently disputed these claims, stating, “What Marvin (Andi Sports Management) put out, saying we gave them no room to negotiate is a big lie.” She revealed that the conflict began when Thompson-Herah’s husband sent her a contract she deemed inadequate, which she rejected. Subsequently, Thompson-Herah initiated communication, and they agreed to meet.
During their meeting, Osbourne discussed a 15 percent compensation, and Thompson-Herah did not express any financial constraints. Osbourne recalled Thompson-Herah’s response during the meeting: “She said to me, ‘Okay, since I have all my equipment, I have a gym, I have my equipment and everything, do I still have to pay for the 15 percent?'” Osbourne believed that Thompson-Herah was in agreement with this arrangement.
However, just over a week later, Thompson-Herah’s husband contacted Osbourne, expressing the need to resolve payment matters. Osbourne reiterated her insistence on a 15 percent compensation, stating that she was not requesting more than that.
Request a specific figure
During their meeting, Thompson-Herah’s husband repeatedly requested a specific figure. Osbourne explained her stance, saying, “All he’s saying to me right now is give me a figure. Give me a figure that I’m comfortable with.” She emphasized that she did not need to be privy to the details of Elaine’s contract, only that a fair and honest calculation of her percentage be made.
As negotiations reached an impasse, an acquaintance of the Herahs, Damia Russell, who had initially approached Osbourne about coaching Elaine due to disappointment with her performance at the national championships, intervened to mediate the situation.
Russell, an assistant track and field coach at the University of New Mexico Highlands, suggested a Non-Disclosure Agreement to address concerns about contract breaches.
Surprise at the response
Osbourne described how Russell listened to the concerns of Thompson-Herah’s husband and even provided a compensation figure, which led to a negative reaction from Thompson-Herah’s side. Russell declined to comment on the matter without first consulting with Osbourne.
Osbourne expressed her surprise at the response, stating, “You ask for a figure, and you get a figure, you negotiate. You don’t cuss and quarrel and talk about extortion.” Frustrated by the lack of progress, Osbourne decided to temporarily withdraw her coaching services, informing Elaine of this decision.
Ultimately, Thompson-Herah and her management chose to terminate the relationship with Coach Osbourne.
