The Guyana Amazon Warriors kicked off their home leg of CPL 2024 with a resounding 30-run victory over the St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots at the Guyana National Stadium on Friday.
Despite a modest batting total of 137, the Warriors’ bowlers, led by a devastating spin attack, neutralized the Patriots on a tricky Providence surface, ensuring a comfortable win.
After being sent in to bat, the Warriors faced early trouble as Ashmead Nedd (4-25) tore through their top order. Tim Robinson and Kevin Sinclair were both dismissed for ducks, and captain Shai Hope could only manage seven runs, leaving the Warriors struggling at 28-3.
However, Shimron Hetmyer provided a crucial counterattack. His breathtaking 63 off 33 balls, studded with four fours and five sixes, brought momentum back to the Warriors. Despite his dismissal at 83-5 by Tabraiz Shamsi, Hetmyer’s innings gave the Warriors a fighting chance.
Late contributions
Late contributions from Romario Shepherd, who remained unbeaten on 34 off 22 balls, helped push the total to 137, offering their bowlers something to defend.
The Warriors’ spin-friendly home pitch made the chase difficult for the Patriots. Moeen Ali was brilliant with the ball, claiming 2-9 with sharp turn and bounce, while Shamar Joseph (3-9) mopped up the lower order.
Although Evin Lewis fought valiantly for the Patriots, scoring 49 off 46 balls, he lacked support as wickets fell regularly around him. The Patriots could only reach 107 before being bowled out in the 18th over, securing a memorable win for the home side.
