In a poignant tribute to nine-year-old Kelsey Ferrigon, who tragically lost her life on May 9, 2025, a scholarship is being established in her memory at St. John’s Primary School in St. Catherine.
The announcement was made by Principal Louise Clarke during a thanksgiving service held on Monday at the Spanish Town Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Kelsey, a student at St. John’s Primary at the time of her passing, was remembered by Principal Clarke as a “bright-eyed, hard-working student, who always showed great enthusiasm for learning.” Ms. Clarke shared that Kelsey was a quiet and bright child who joined the St. John’s family on September 5, 2022. Her teacher described her as a “problem-solver, the one who was always trying to fix whatever was wrong in the class.”
“The name Kelsey Ferrigon will live on at St John’s Primary, that great institution where she was a student for a short time, through the kind initiative of a scholarship being presented to us by the St. Catherine Chamber of Commerce,” Ms. Clarke told Kelsey’s grieving mother and members of the congregation.
Lamenting the profound loss, Ms. Clarke expressed her sorrow, noting that Kelsey’s life was “snatched away during a month when children were being celebrated.” May is observed annually as Child Month in Jamaica, focusing on recognizing and celebrating children, promoting their rights, and highlighting their importance in society. Ironically, this year’s theme was ‘Act Now: Stand Against Child Abuse and Exploitation’.
Kelsey’s brutal killing has sent shockwaves not only across the island but also through the Jamaican diaspora community. In response, a Florida-based Jamaican diaspora organization, the Female Development World Organization (FDWO), issued an urgent call for immediate legislative action to strengthen child protection laws in Jamaica.
The FDWO, which advocates for the protection and rights of vulnerable populations, demanded swift reforms following revelations that the suspect in Kelsey’s killing, Giovanni Ellis, was a convicted sex offender out on bail for a rape charge. Ellis was later fatally shot during a police operation near Sandy Bay, Clarendon, after being named a person of interest and deemed armed and dangerous by authorities.
Kelsey Ferrigon was found dead at her Spanish Town home on the night of Friday, May 9. Her 16-year-old brother made the horrific discovery inside a barrel while their mother was away. Police reports indicate that Kelsey was partially nude and showed signs of physical abuse, leading investigators to believe she had been sexually assaulted before her death.
The Jamaican government later said it is moving to review legislation governing access to the country’s sex offenders registry.
