A wrong-way crash on the Florida Turnpike early Sunday morning left two dead and two others seriously injured, authorities said.
The incident occurred just before 4 a.m. in the northbound lanes near the Bird Road exit. According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), a blue Honda traveling south in the northbound lanes collided head-on with a silver Toyota. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.
Shortly after the initial collision, a second crash involved a white Toyota striking the two disabled vehicles and an FHP patrol vehicle already at the scene. Two people inside the white Toyota were transported to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital with serious injuries. The FHP trooper whose vehicle was struck was not in the vehicle at the time and was unharmed.
All northbound lanes of the Turnpike were closed as authorities continue to investigate the crashes, which remain under active review.
