Tamarac launches citywide smart water meter upgrade

The City of Tamarac, known for its large Caribbean American community, is launching a major infrastructure upgrade to modernize its water system and improve customer service.

Beginning April 28, 2025, and continuing through the end of the year, the city will begin replacing all existing water meters with advanced smart meters.

The new system aims to deliver more accurate water usage readings, provide better leak detection, and give residents more control over their water consumption. “This upgrade is part of our ongoing commitment to enhance service, promote conservation, and modernize Tamarac’s infrastructure,” city officials said in a statement.

Smart meters will offer on-demand readings that ensure more consistent and transparent billing. Through an online portal or app, residents will be able to monitor their daily water usage, set alerts for unusual activity, and use self-service tools to manage their accounts. These features are expected to help reduce waste, avoid costly leaks, and protect the city’s water supply.

Installation overview:

  • Schedule: HST Utility will handle installations Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., starting April 28.

  • Cost: There is no charge to homeowners or businesses.

  • Access: Most meters are outdoors, so residents don’t need to be home. However, access to the meter area must be clear of obstructions.

  • Downtime: Each installation will take about 20–30 minutes, during which water will be temporarily shut off.

  • Plumbing: No changes are needed for most homes, though property owners must ensure their valves and plumbing are in working condition.

  • Commercial Properties: Installations will be coordinated with businesses to avoid disruption.

Participation in the upgrade is mandatory for all Tamarac water service customers. HST technicians will be clearly identified by branded shirts and marked vehicles.

Timeline:

  • May–June: Smaller meters (1″ and 1.5″) installed.

  • August–October: Larger meters (2″ and 3″) installed.

  • By November 3, 2025: All installations completed.

City officials encourage residents to take full advantage of the new tools to track usage, conserve water, and manage monthly bills more efficiently.
